Double Takes Back
Big Store, Small Town

Huge store gets thumbs-up
The area where the store is to be built.Smartprice is coming to Riverton. Last night, the town councillors voted yes to the store. It will be the first in the area.

Riverton mayor Ann Hopkins says that Smartprice is great news for the whole town. “Prices will be lower and there will be a wide range of goods to choose from. There’ll be new jobs, and more people will travel to Riverton to do their shopping.”

The store will be built on a vacant lot near West River. However, some local people are angry. They say that the river is home to an endangered bird. “If the store is built there, the birds will leave,” local resident Sally Bundy says.

Building will start in June.

Letters to the EditorSupport local business

Ed's Shoe StoreDear Sir,

My family owns Ed’s Shoe Store. We can’t compete with the low prices of the big stores. If Smartprice comes to Riverton, we’ll be forced to close. I’ll lose my job, and so will my son. Mayor Hopkins doesn’t mention the jobs that will be lost when small businesses like ours close down.

We’ve sold shoes to the same people for the past forty-seven years. At Smartprice, you won’t find the kind of service we offer. Who will you support – big business or family-owned stores that have been in your community for years?

Taking Care of the Birds

Ospreys NestingDear Sir,

I was shocked to read that Smartprice is coming to Riverton. It’ll be built right next to the river where ospreys breed. People come from all over to watch this amazing bird.

Ospreys are endangered in most parts of the country. We’re lucky they have chosen a place near our town to live and breed. We should protect the osprey, not destroy its home. We don’t need more stores we need to take good care of the environment.

Great news for all

Mayor HopkinsDear Sir,

Congratulations to Mayor Hopkins and his council for voting to allow Smartprice to be built here. It’ll be the best thing that’s ever happened to Riverton.

Over the last few years, Main Street has grown more and more quiet. The local stores aren’t doing very well, and people are shopping out of town. Smartprice will change all that. Well done, Riverton Town Council. You’ve saved our town.
